Our ambition is clean energy that can be deployed in smaller, modular systems and scaled to meet demand.

Our ambition is clean energy that can be deployed in smaller, modular systems and scaled to meet demand.

Horne is pursuing that ambition through hybrid confinement, rapid prototyping, and simulation informed by experimental data. The aim is to focus development resources on the design decisions that matter most.

Magnetic field simulation.

HOW WE BUILD

From model to machine.

From model to machine.

The engineers who build our reactors also build the simulations. WarpX-based modeling and our operating prototype inform one another, helping us evaluate design choices before committing to new hardware.

Simulation, fabrication, and testing under one roof keep the feedback loop close. Our focus is on improving the model, testing its predictions, and using each experiment to inform the next step.

Fusion companies share an ambition to make practical energy. The differences lie in how they heat and confine plasma, recover energy, and develop a machine that can scale.

FUSION APPROACH

RELATION TO HORNE

Horne Technologies

FUSION APPROACH

Hybrid confinement: inertial electrostatic heating paired with a superconducting, magnetically shielded grid.

RELATION TO HORNE

Our design goal is modular, scalable energy. Current development connects an operating prototype with in-house simulation and hardware iteration.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

FUSION APPROACH

A tokamak using high-temperature superconducting magnets. SPARC is its demonstration machine; ARC is its planned power plant.

RELATION TO HORNE

Both approaches use superconducting technology. CFS applies it to a tokamak; Horne uses magnetic shielding within a hybrid electrostatic design.

FUSION APPROACH

Pulsed field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas, targeting deuterium–helium-3 fusion and direct electricity recovery.

RELATION TO HORNE

Shares an emphasis on building and iterating hardware. Its pulsed FRC architecture and direct electricity strategy differ from Horne’s hybrid confinement approach.

TAE Technologies

FUSION APPROACH

An advanced beam-driven field-reversed configuration (FRC), with hydrogen–boron as its intended commercial fuel.

RELATION TO HORNE

Also pursues an alternative to tokamaks. TAE uses neutral beams to support its FRC plasma; Horne’s design centers on electrostatic heating and magnetic shielding.

General Fusion

FUSION APPROACH

Magnetized Target Fusion: mechanical compression of magnetized plasma within a liquid-metal system, designed to capture heat for electricity generation.

RELATION TO HORNE

Combines magnetic confinement with compression. Horne’s hybrid design instead pairs electrostatic heating with a magnetically shielded grid.

Based on company technical descriptions reviewed October 20, 2026. Comparisons are Horne’s summary of those descriptions. Design goals are not demonstrated commercial performance; the entries do not imply equal technical maturity.
